Link Friday – Mountain DIYs

I’ve had mountains in my head lately. I think I'll make a pillow, maybe with two peaks. While I was browsing Pinterest for inspiration, I came across these cute DIY project’s.mountain DIY's

1. Into sewing? Design sponge has a detailed tutorial for a fabulous mountain pillow.

2. I love the look of this minimal mountain clock. I’m just not that handy with tools, maybe some day.

3. Want something more practical, how about this cute adventurous card holder?

4. Or a mountain mouse pad? I love the snowy look of this one.

5. If you don’t want a full sized pillow there’s always a mountain pin cushion. So adorable!

6. And something fast and easy to make any cake magical, mountain and moon cake toppers! Brilliant if you need some decorations on a short notice.

January Reads

In an effort to be more mindful this year, I though I’d list all the books I’ve read each month. Or listened to, as audio books are perfect if you are into crafting. I’m not going to review these books, this is just list.

These are just the books I finished this month, I am also in the middle of a few books, like that everlasting The Second World War.

January Books

Susan Cain: Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking
Dave Ramsey: The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness
David Sedaris: Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls
Kate Harrison: The 5:2 Diet Book
Sheryl Sandberg: Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead
Don Miguel Ruiz: The Four Agreements

This Week

1. The weather was at first so cold and now it’s been about -4 degrees for a few days. Ok. Horribly cold wind though.

2. I finally packed away the Christmas tree. I was going to say it was time, but I guess the time was a few weeks ago. So. Still, it was sad.

3. I’m stilling reading The Second World War before going to sleep and I’m not sure that it is such a good idea. Especially as things get very gruesome towards the end. Also, we watched the newest Hunger Games movie the other night and these two combined resulted in a glorious nightmare, where I was chased by both the Nazis and giant baboons. I think I need to find a happier book to read before bed.

4. This picture cracks me up. The A Beautiful Mess app is finally available for Windows phones and I had to get it (the first app I’ve paid for). I love the concept, and couldn’t wait to play with it, but I take such sh*itty pictures, the results are just funny. Haha. Anyway, on to the subject of this picture, Jake was all day yesterday playing GG with his friends and when he got home he brought this chicken kebab for me! I loooove it. And Jake. I thought it was funny how the packaging says “paras kebab”, which means the best kebab in Finnish and then has in English “good kebab”. Fair enough, I guess the standards are higher in English.

5. I had this chair in my studio when I lived in Tampere. But since moving here, it’s been in the closet because the screws were lost in the move. Well, I randomly found them the other day and after 1,5 years, the chair is back! I’m slightly apprehensive, because I found 4 screws and there are holes for 6. So I made Jake sit on it first.

6. Some thrift stuff. Blue plastic place mats that look pretty garish, but are for a DIY project that will hopefully make them pretty. A square glass jar. I'm trying to switch into glass containers for all food items, since plastic sounds so scary. Two small flower shaped pots, for holding little items. They are a weird beige colour, but I’m going to spray paint them white, as soon as it’s warm enough to paint stuff outside. And a really pretty lampshade, the picture doesn’t do it justice. I think I'll paint this white too.

How was your week?

I made this fancy “currently” bit to add for my weekly grid, then totally forgot about it, so adding it here. The inspiration is from rukristin, a lovely blog about Project Life.

Link Friday – More Pom Poms

pom poms

1. Pom pom town play set. This blog has so many tutorials for different kinds of pom poms, including animals, Halloween and  flowers.

2. Alphabet pom poms. So. Cute. You could spell anything, a person’s name or “welcome” or “congratulations”, anything.

3. Square pom poms. Amazing.

4. Apple pie topper pom poms. Such a great idea!

5. Tutti frutti pom poms. If you want something besides apples.

6. Heart pom poms. Valentines day is coming! These would make a cute garland or cupcake toppers or a embellishment for a gift wrap.

This Week

1. I write so much about the weather! Anyway, it has been cold, –24 today. Urgh. I decided to skip the walk and do some hooping instead.

2. Just to illustrate how nerdy things can get over here. While I was raiding in WoW, Jake hooked up his computer to the TV so he could watch a LoL stream from a bigger screen. Both wearing headphones, both in separate group calls.

3. This is such a single person lunch. But Jake eats at work and it’s so cold I’ve gone with “what ever I can make with the ingredients from the freezer” –route. A quesadilla and a can of PepsiMax it is.

4. Our new washing machine and the first load of clean laundry I washed with it! Hah. But it is a very good machine and I actually love doing laundry.

5. I read somewhere that you should try using summer nail polish to try cheer yourself up, with all the cold and darkness. So I pulled out my favourite polish from last summer, Lumene 29 Quivering. It seems to be working!

What have you been up to?

Link Friday – Pom-Pom Love

I’ve decided to start a new feature, where every Friday I gather a few links I was inspired by that week. They may have a theme, like this one does! or be completely random.

I have been obsessed with pom-poms since November, so here are some projects I love, but haven’t gotten around doing yet.

1. Pom-pom napkin rings. How much fun are these? Just change the colours to match your party.

2. Pom-pom lei. Completely brilliant and something I’d never thought of. I think I’ll make one and just wear it around the house.

3. Pom-pom bookmarks. I love reading, I love pom-poms, perfect.

4. Pom-pom rug. I love this. It’s so cute and cosy and I want to make one. But… where do I put it?

5. Hanging pom-pom text. Maybe not love, but something, a giant pom pom ampersand maybe?

Any pom-pom links you’d like to add?

This Week

this week

I got a concerned message, and not from my mother either, about where is the This Week from last week?! So here it is.

I only managed to take three pictures. One of Jake eating ice cream, one of some groceries and the one above. I’ll spare you from the others.

Jake is home on sick leave and I’m feeling like I might be coming down with something too. The weather is freezing again, which might be the reason.

We watched two movies: The Escape Plan, which was fine, mainly because Arnold had a beard, and Machete Kills, which can only be described as random and bizarre.

My yoga classes started again. Ah, stretching. Ballet starts next week, can’t wait.

Having had no washing machine for two weeks now, we’ve amassed about ten loads of dirty laundry. Doing laundry is one of the only housework's I actually like, too. Doing a load of laundry in the morning makes me feel productive and I get much more done. Without laundry I get nothing done!

All Christmas decorations have been 70% off in stores and all Christmas candy -40%. I’ve stocked up on both. I’m definitely not dieting in January.

And our Christmas tree is still up. I did take all the ornaments down, except the lights, so it’s not that Christmassy. Right? I mean, spruces exist outside Christmas. Now, it’s just a tree, in our living room. And that’s fine.

Crochet “Camera” Phone Case

crochet phone case

I was actually going to buy a case for my phone until I came across this very cute Etsy shop called Meemanan which had purses that look like cameras. I though it was such a cool idea and just had to make something similar.

What I did was basically stare at the pictures of the purses, until I had an idea of what to do. I really liked how a few elements, the change of colour, adding a flash and a lens (with light reflecting of it! Isn’t that the best bit?), could transform a basic rectangular into something that looks like a camera.

crochet phone case

I have been crocheting for awhile now, but have mainly been concentrating on amigurumis, meaning I’ve mainly done sc’s and nothing else. However, I really liked those stitches that looked like knitting, so I decided to give it a go. I found a very good tutorial from I really like how it looks, and as a bonus it’s very easy to do. I always love it when something simple gives a big impact!

I think something like this, stuffed and with the top sewn shut, would make a cute toy camera for a child.

This Week

Nothing much this week, just getting back to normal.

1. The weather has been so odd. Very warm, almost all days are on the plus side. We did get some snow earlier this week, but it all melted almost straight away.

2. That’s our current washing machine on the left. The old one started making super loud noises and Jake contacted our landlady. She said the guarantee had run out and if we’d mind buying a new one for ourselves, that we could take with us when we move. So, we did. Only, it wont come for two weeks. I’m already running out of clothes, but Jake who owns a ton of clothes, including 50 billion T-shirts, is just fine. I don’t think I’ll make it.

3. I managed to slip, again, on my bike and mashed my right knee that hadn’t fully healed from the last time. Jake’s co-worker recommended this horse ointment, that she uses, not only for her horses, but for herself. I have to say, it seems to be working.

4. Since Jake worked all through Christmas, he’s had the past week off. We’ve been playing through the Deponia trilogy. It’s pretty good, especially all the huzzah’s.

5. I crocheted this phone cover for myself. I didn’t have one and was afraid the screen would get scratched.Just some scrap yarn, but I thought it turned out pretty cute!
